Walter Hohman is our company founder and has loved music all his life. Walter's DJ career began in Timmins Ontario in 1982 at his high school when he was elected Social Director at the age of 15.
(If you don't count, falling asleep on the family couch cuddling with his first vinyl record at the age of 6.)
At 18 years, he progressed to hosting teen events with various partners and uber-technician brother Carl Hohman, converting church basements, legions and ethnic halls into delightfully sweaty dance parties for area students.
He moved into "Club" work in 1986 at the local Casey's Restaurant and grew there from performing to managing senior Disc Jockey and finally Summer Promotions Manager, even programming music remotely while attending Fanshawe College in London. On holidays from school, Walter DJ'ed in Timmins for the returning students, bringing the flavour of SW-Ontario charts with him, even playing on New Year's Eve for 12 years running.
Through the years, Walter mastered playing music for people on cassette, vinyl, cd and video. He still owns every piece of music he ever purchased (or snitched from his brothers) and listens to music often.
Events work up North eventually included arena dances for clients such as Molson's, outdoor parties for organizations such as M.A.D.D., corporate functions for CKGB Radio and charity dances for The Timmins District Hospital Fund and Crimestoppers but to name a few.
South-western Ontario experiences trained Walter about Audio Visual skills in large screen video, room planning, concert-scale sound, pyrotechnics and more. Road trips to hometown Timmins became more and more interesting as his bags of tricks grew and grew.
(Carl Hohman still runs his own Northern division of the company in partnership with Midnight Express Productions to handle DJ'ing and Band/Concert Events in Timmins Ontario.)
Entertainment By Design (EBD) is the original company created in 1986 to service his hometown Casey's Restaurant as disc jockey and music programmer. This company grew beyond the home-based business level in 1996 by purchasing the inventory of London-based retail and rental shop. Walter split off rentals under the name DJHQ in 1998 and by the end of the century, EBD Event Services was thriving.
For the 2000's, EBD expanded it's Events work to offically include Disc Jockey Services - very appropriate with DJ'ing being its beginning roots 14 years earlier.
Walter's huge music vocabulary spans over 22 years (at 2006) and his customer service focus is second to none. Backed with a vast technical knowledge and ability to improvise, his proven track record of successful parties is no surprise. This is the hallmark of Entertainment By Design and it's growing team of talented Disc Jockies.
Walter and his herd of four brothers were all music-oriented whether it was school band, air cadets, youth choirs, college air guitar competitions, sound/light techs, enjoying arena and open-air concerts or just spending hours and hours with the headphones on.
This tradition continues today with Walter's 14 years young son Conrad who now helps with setups and has attended Music101 thru concerts at the John Labatt's Centre for Shania Twain, Avril Lavigne and the Bare Naked Ladies and recently, Christine Aguilera at the Air Canada Center for his fourth. We're hoping for some Rush tickets for September! (This is on top of the over 40 concerts Dad has attended through his life!)
is at the core of Walter's life - and always will be.
